Labour Housing - a Modern Typology

Conceptual design of a reimagined contemporary and inclusive labour housing in the GCC.

About the Project

Conceptual architectural design of a contemporary, inclusive labor housing prototype to elevate living conditions for the labor community in the UAE. Grounded in research, the design introduces an efficient, scalable modular system that enhances individuality and mitigates space exploitation and overcrowding. It also incorporates inclusive communal spaces thoughtfully tailored to workers' preferred pastimes and wellness activities, addressing diverse accommodation needs with dignity, practicality and a sense of community.

The Process & The Impact

The project began with in-depth research and documentation of existing labor housing prototypes in Dubai and Sharjah. Visits to these housing projects, coupled with interviews and photographs, revealed the harsh realities faced by many workers living in confined overcrowded environments. The process was not without its challenges, particularly in 2008, due to various documentation constraints at the time. Driven by a desire to address social justice through design, I reimagined the typical labor camps, focusing on creating spaces that prioritized individuality within a communal framework.

Through form studies and explorations using diverse systems and mediums, I developed a modular unit that secures personal space while fostering connectivity to the broader community. The design integrates communal areas such as spaces for sport and movie-watching, inspired directly by feedback gathered from interviews. A particularly striking element for me was the vibrancy of clothes washed and hung on balconies, a subtle yet powerful expression of individuality. This inspired a series of collages that infused the model with color and realism, transforming the project from a mere blueprint into a vibrant, practical solution that truly reflects the lives and aspirations of its future inhabitants.

The project won the Meraas and Cityscape Architect of the Year Award, recognizing its impact in addressing social justice through thoughtful and compassionate design.
